Here are 12 books with big implications for the world of work that are likely to make a splash in the coming year:

1. Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek (January 7)

  1. “Thanks for the Feedback” sounds great along with quite a few others on your list 🙂 I am always looking for inspiring and helpful business books for small business owners and entrepreneurs. I’ve been struggling the last year or so to project a business plan for my small business. After reading multiple books on the subject I came across one called “Liber8 Your Business”(http://liber8yourbusiness.com) by author Laura Humphreys. She is an entrepreneur who has won multiple awards, as well as grown and sold a number of small businesses. It was refreshing to see a different take on the strategies involved in small business growth. Instead of planning ahead and taking a day to day approach to a business strategy, she encourages owners to look at the end goal first and work their design backwards. This book will give you the tools necessary to visualize the final objective and craft a blueprint to get from A to B (or B to A actually!) It’s hard for us business owners to not get bogged down in the daily grind and this book will help you step back and see the big picture. Hope it will help others as it has helped me!

      An activity that chimes with this that we love using – for ourselves as well as bringing to the people we work with is to find 3 pictures (postcards to from the internet a visit to gallery or museum or wherever you find them)…
      ~ one that represents what your ideal future would be (in whatever timeframe feels ‘right’ for you at the moment – 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years or “by the time I am …”);
      ~ a mother one that represents what will most hinder your likelihood of achieving this ideal;
      ~ and then a third that represents what will most help you to achieve your ideal.
      Then – working from comes from these images – considering what we call the four dimensions of strategic development:
      1 – what is already working well that should be kept the same or even consolidated and reinforced;
      2 – what has potential to be increased, grown, strengthened, developed, done more;
      3 – what needs to be avoided or reduced, lessened or got away from;
      4 – what needs to be changed radically or dine completely differently or maybe ben started from new.

      The best book we found when we made the shift from a group of associates to a limited company, was The Small Business Handbook: An Entrepreneur’s Definitive Guide To Starting A Business and Growing A Business, which has a similar “start-the-the-end-mind” approach as the one you describe from Laura Humphreys, with the addition of making you think about your business from the perspective of a ‘shareholder,’ which we found a good discipline even though we never expect to earn dividends from our business as such. Some of its references might be out of date now but its questions are still good. Let me know if you’d like more from this.

      Hope this can helpfully add in to your existing thinking.
      And very best wishes for developing your business and getting it to fly. There’s nothing easy about this and we are still failing and learning as much as we are succeeding at it, but it’s worth it. Truly.
